S-trap or P-trap?
Every toilet connects to the waste pipe in one of two ways. The new toilet must match the one you have, so this is the first thing we check.
S-trap (floor outlet)
The waste pipe goes straight down into the floor. Usually you won't see any pipe behind the toilet.
P-trap (wall outlet)
The waste pipe goes out through the wall behind the toilet. You'll see a short outlet pipe connecting the back of the toilet to the wall.
How to measure before you buy
- S-trap
- Measure from the tiled wall behind the toilet (not the skirting) to the centre of the floor outlet. If the old toilet is still in place, the bolt caps at its base often line up with the outlet — if you're unsure, just send a photo.
- P-trap
- Measure from the finished floor up to the centre of the outlet pipe in the wall.
Write the number in millimetres and send it with your photo. Toilets are made for set distances, so this number decides which models fit.
